Sack Trucks: Buying Guide

Equipping your workplace with the right storage and transport solutions can make a big difference to efficiency, and take the strain off your staff. Everything we stock here meets basic regulatory standards and we aim to include only high-quality items that we know will get the job done. What you need to do is establish your requirements so you can find the products that offer the best fit.

When it comes to trucks, the first thing you need to think about is resilience. Some of our trucks are specifically designed for handling heavy loads. If you require a less heavy duty solution, you can choose a lighter option, which will be more economical, but it is inadvisable to exceed weight limits, as this will impact the operational life of the truck and could negatively affect your insurance. Some trucks are designed to cope with rugged terrain and can be used on building sites or in yards where the tarmac has been badly damaged, but others are designed for indoor use on smooth floors.

You will also need to consider how you intend to manage loading and unloading. Some trucks are designed to tip, while others will need objects to be lifted on and off them. If you’re concerned that items may fall off accidentally, choose a truck with the option of a lid or raised sides.

If storage is limited in your workplace, we provide nesting and folding trucks, such as folding box trucks and our clever folding trolleys, an ingeniously designed device that maximises on space saving while giving you effective transporting ability.

One of the easiest ways to move boxes and bags around is to use a sack truck, and these are particularly useful when you have limited space and struggle to get a larger truck around obstacles. All sack trucks are resilient, but it’s worth thinking about wheel size and the material of the tyres if you plan to use them on rugged ground, you may want to consider our rough terrain platform truck, if this is the case. You should also think about the size of the base in relation to what you want to use it for, and about how many crossbars the truck has, especially if you want to have the option of securing goods to it with a strap. Some sack trucks fold for easy storage such as our super compact sack trucks, and some are designed so that they can be walked up and down stairs, though you should be aware that this could place extra strain on the workers using them.
All of our trolleys are designed for easy manoeuvrability, once you have the wheels lined up, so the principal features you will need to think about when buying them is how many shelves you need and whether or not you need a lid or sides to prevent objects sliding off them. Weight is not usually a major issue, but it’s worth buying a heavy-duty trolley if you expect to be stacking a lot on it and using it daily.

When you’re considering the use of dollies, the main thing to think about is what you will use them to transport – which could be several different things at different times – and how sturdy you will need them to be.

Our roll pallets provide extra security for items being moved but are designed only for use on flat surfaces. Folding or nesting options can be a good idea if space is limited.

FAQ's

What’s the difference between a truck and a trolley?

As a rule, trolleys offer more manoeuvrability, but trucks are sturdier and can be used on rough surfaces where trolleys struggle to make progress. We have a variety of designs of each, to help you find what you need.

How do I know how big a base I need on a sack truck?

Sack trucks are designed to be tilted backwards when being moved so the objects they are carrying rest against the back. That means that for standard size boxes, only a small base is needed. You will only need a larger base if you are carrying outsize boxes or bags that can’t be strapped upright.
