Spill Containment

Leaks and spillages of hazardous materials can have disastrous consequences. As well as the obvious health risks to those nearby, and the potential for substances to damage stock and equipment, there is also the risk that the substance could pollute the environment by spreading outside the confines of your business. When emergencies happen, a quick response is imperative to prevent this from occurring.

Your COSHH assessment will have included a plan for what to do if a dangerous situation arises. Having the correct spill response equipment is a vital part of this.

What is a spill kit used for?

Spill kits are used to deal with leaks and spillages quickly and safely, ensuring that further spread of liquids is avoided wherever possible. All spillages need to be cleaned up quickly as they increase the risk of injuries from slipping. However, for hazardous substances, it is even more urgent that the spillage is contained and removed immediately. Having a list of suitable spill clean-up supplies in one place, and using an item such as absorbent rubber barrier, rigid lock spill berms, and PPE, ensures that you are ready to deal with any leaks or floods without delay.

How to deal with spillages safely?

It is important to plan ahead and make sure that you have a supply of the items you need to contain spillages. Carrying out a risk assessment and to compare the type of model will help you identify the type of spill blockade you need, what sizes, and how many of them. Be sure to keep a list of what scenarios you are likely to come up against, as this will add value, as well as time and efforts. The Seton range includes products including absorbent spill bunds for chemical storage and spill barriers in various sizes and materials with a view to keep liquids under control, giving you extra time for cleaning up the spillage. Make sure that all workers are familiar with the correct procedures for dealing with spillages, including using suitable PPE to avoid coming into contact with substances that could cause damage to skin, or that could release toxic fumes.

In the workplace, signage is an essential item that will ensure that workers have the information they need to deal with spillages safely. Our General Spill Information Point Safety Guide product is ideal for providing relevant guidance quickly. The eye-catching bright yellow sign is easy to spot in a hurry when a leak occurs. We also supply specific signage for tackling chemical spills. All spillage equipment, such as leak control blockades, plastic bunds and PPE, should be located as near as possible to view areas where there is the highest risk of spillages.

Our rigid, absorbent and flexible spillage blockades can quickly be put in position around liquids to prevent them from spreading, and with further peace of mind that liquids will be stored at a high capacity. Taking prompt action as a spillblocker will ensure that there is a minimal risk of workers or visitors to the premises coming into contact with hazardous substances and getting hurt. It also ensures that materials and equipment in your working environment are not damaged by leaks.

What spill barrier do I need?

The spill bund you need will depend on the type of workplace and the item or equipment you need to protect from spillages. As you will see, we have pulled together a list of our best range of Blockades, Booms and Berms for you to compare, and select the right product for you.

Spill Barrier Bright yellow spill barrier to contain spills

For larger sites, spillage containment blockades will most likely be a required element of your emergency response measures. These flexible and absorbent spill control blockades are easy to fit around leaks or a flood of any size and shape preventing them from spreading out of the immediate area. By using a spillblocker as your first line of defence for a flood or large leak, you will be able to reduce panic and take time and care to clean contaminated areas thoroughly. Why not view our rubber spill barrier, this polyurethane model can contain or divert leaks and spillages quickly and easily and has excellent resistance to water, oil and most chemicals. It can also be easily cleaned with soap and water and used again.

This flexible barrier measures three metres in length, and is manufactured from polyurethane in a bright yellow colour so that it instantly draws attention and makes people coming into the area aware that there is a spillage that needs to be avoided.

Booms Florescent yellow boom kit to contain liquid. Includes corners, vinyl strapping, and silicone caulk

Booms are designed to contain liquids and prevent them from spreading. Some booms are designed to float, so they can be used to contain oil leaks in a large expanse of water. Our boom kits can be fitted together to cover large areas and are an ideal item for placing around machinery or in locations where leaks and a flood are liable to happen. They can also be situated along walkways to prevent them from becoming wet and slippery. Our boom kit for example, works as an oil spill boom, and can also be used for most chemical spillages. They are also incredibly easy to put together. To create your boom, simply apply caulk to the bottom, place sections together and apply pressure.

You can also create a custom barrier of any shape or size with our Make a Boom Kit for corners, which contains highly visible yellow flood-prone equipment to protect busy walkways from a hazardous leak. Manufactured from hard wearing vinyl, these booms will simply bounce back into shape if driven over by a vehicle, due to their foam-filled wall construction. The durable vinyl material resists oils, coolants and most chemicals. For larger overflows, simply add our Make a Boom Wall Section can be used, and this can connect with the corner elements from the Make a Boom Kit. Both products listed can be used as an excellent spillblocker, but it is important to compare which spillblocker may be right for your scenario.

Spill Berms Bright yellow spill berm designed to catch fluids that have escaped from their primary container

A spill berm is a secondary containment solution that acts as a temporary basin to catch fluids that have escaped from their primary container.

Spill berms acts to catch minor spills at any capacity, either at the source or temporarily store drums and other containers that become leaky. The product is fully portable, and can be placed anywhere in a matter of moments and the foam side walls allow for easy roll-through access. The yellow urethane materials mean that it is easily noticed by workers and visitors who need to access the area where the berm is in use, so they can avoid contact with potentially harmful substances. This type of berm can be anchored in place using the grommets located in the corners. It is also easy to transport, so it can be taken for use off-site if needed.

The rigid lock spill berm works on a similar principle, not only is it fully portable, but can also be scaled up to provide long-term containment for vehicles, tankers and heavy equipment. It also offers superior protection and chemical resistance against the harshest of liquids at a high capacity, including petroleum, oils, greases, and most acids. With its specialist Reinforced CriticalCorner technology and single-piece construction, this berm product has added strength to ensure that seams do not leak. Thanks to its smart design, vehicles can drive across the walls of the rigid berm, which can take weights of at least 11,000 lbs.

Essential Equipment Black neoprene drain cover used to prevent chemical or oil spills from entering drainage systems and waterways

In order to deal with spilt liquids effectively you will also require several other items. For outdoor leaks, using a model such as a drain cover will provide a first line of defence preventing chemicals or oils entering drainage systems and waterways. Take a look at our Neoprene Drain Cover (pictured) and Magnetic Drain Cover.

For quick clean ups, personal protective wear, including gloves, goggles and overalls should be provided. To dispose of used chemicals, hazardous waste bags and bins are also available.

Finally, it’s important that containers are marked with the correct hazard classification symbols and safety data sheets must be available so anyone dealing with a spillage is aware of the associated risks.

We also stock a wide range of Spill Kit Signage to ensure that everyone in your workplace is aware of the potential dangers of leaks. We also have the option to add or make custom changes, depending on your business needs.

Are you taking the right precautions with your chemicals and storage?

The risk of spillages or a flood occurring can be kept to a minimum when you have all chemicals along with other hazardous substances stored and transported securely and in accordance with relevant safety regulations. Storing containers and products on a chemical spill bund is an important part of spill prevention. In addition to a standard static chemical bund, we also have a range of portable bunds to add to your spill supplies list that can easily be moved from one area to another, whilst still storing a high capacity of liquid.
