Height Restriction Barrier Regulations

Height restriction regulations relate to the importance of height limiters on public and private roads, car parks, and restricted areas requiring vehicle control. In the UK, responsible persons and authorities must identify and clearly mark vulnerable areas on public roads and in and around workplaces. These include sites where structures such as pipe bridges and overhead gantries are located.

The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) indicates the standard minimum clearance on a public road as 5.03 metres. Any clearance less than this must be clearly marked before and on or at the structure. The marking or beam should be at least 75mm less than the restricted height.

Urban Height Limits

Various workplaces and some residential communal buildings and areas also apply height limits, such as:
  • Covered car parks

  • Through main gates

These height restrictions are enforced to:
  • Promote safety and prevent accidents

  • Prevent damage and protect the infrastructure of roads

Warehouse height regulations

Any warehouse constitutes a unique working environment with a variety of safety rules and precaution. Clear height refers to the distance from the lowest point of a roof to where it joins the floor.

Logistics and distribution managers need to consider and calculate these heights to ensure safe warehouse operations. Some of these considerations include the:

Load height limit
The HSE provides comprehensive guidance on pallet and safe racking, including safe stacking heights. Experts recommend that the load height limit corresponds to the maximum reach of loading and lifting equipment such as forklifts. Marking load height limits with height barriers increases safety and practicality.
Forklift height
This refers to the maximum reach of your forklifts. Prevent equipment damage and accident risks by indicating maximum lifting heights with Seton’s practical height barrier markers.
Warehouse safety barriers
These should provide physical safety protection and prevent material handling equipment, such as forklifts, from colliding with rack, other vehicles, and people. Often, these height limiters must be combined with floor and wall markers.
