Make recycling your business

The global climate crisis is more of a threat to our way of life than it has ever been, with severe consequences for our health and environment. However there are solutions, recycling is one of the most impactful ways to protect our environment by reducing harmful waste.

WRAP’s Recycling Week is now in its 17th year and we are excited to be celebrating this event by launching our entirely new range of Seton Recycling signs. Our informative signs end the confusion around recycling, with clear images and icons to inform you on what to recycle and where.

Clear signage supports recycling at home and at work and our range of bins can be used in conjunction with our signs. This reduces cross-contamination when items are placed into the incorrect recycling bin. Effective recycling signs encourage good recycling practices and help to clarify which products can (and cannot) be recycled. Make recycling your business with the Seton recycling range.

Why Recycle?

With a growing population, we are producing and consuming more and creating more waste. The question of what to do with the enormous amount of waste that we produce is becoming a major challenge. However, the advantages of recycling mean that we are minimising the use of landfill sites, conserving natural resources and saving energy.

An estimated 222.9 million tonnes of total waste was generated in 2016 in the UK. Commercial and industrial waste made up 41.1 million tonnes of that figure. Approximately 52.3 million tonnes of waste for the UK in 2016 was disposed of at landfills, while incineration with energy recovery accounted for 7.3 million tonnes.(Source: Department for Environmental Food & Rural Affairs.)

Although more than a quarter of the UK’s total waste ends up in a landfill, it’s not ideal. Landfill sites are not designed to break down waste but rather store it where it decomposes slowly in an oxygen-free environment. Unfortunately, waste stored in landfill sites releases harmful chemicals and greenhouse gases such as methane. Recycling reduces the waste sent to landfill. How does recycling help?

As awareness of environmental issues grows, more individuals and businesses are turning to recycling wherever possible. ‘Recycling and other recovery’ accounted for 104.0 million tonnes of our total waste in 2016 making it the UK’s most common final waste treatment. (Source: Department for Environmental Food & Rural Affairs.)

Recycling is an effective way to help combat the negative effects of waste products on our planet. When we recycle, we save energy by re-using materials rather than creating them from scratch – which is expensive as well as labour and energy intensive. Extracting and processing raw materials such as oil and metals requires lots of energy, so recycling existing products whenever possible is much more energy efficient. Recycling also means fewer products end up in landfill sites or are incinerated, so recycling helps to create a better, cleaner environment for us all. Our extensive range has signage for everything from plastic to building materials as well as labels and electronics recycling signs.

Recycling Legislation

Most of the UK’s waste legislation derives from the European Union and aims to encourage resource efficiency.

Public and private waste collectors are required to set up separate collections of paper, plastic, metal and glass wherever technically, environmentally and economically practicable. This duty applies to commercial, industrial and household waste. The UK is required to recycle at least 70% of construction and demolition waste (by weight) and to recycle at least 50% of household waste (by weight) by 2020. Do you and your business meet these targets?

Construction and demolition materials include the debris generated during the construction, renovation, and demolition of buildings, roads, and bridges and often contain bulky, heavy materials. Such materials include concrete, wood, metals, plastic, insulation, ceramic materials, glass and salvaged building components. Know where to recycle these materials with clear recycling signs and designated waste bins from Seton.

Different areas that might require recycling signs include kitchens, building sites, warehouses, offices, schools, hospitals, garden areas and public areas.

Differentiating between similar materials is also crucial, for example, clear glass and coloured glass, or metal, scrap metal, aluminium foil, aluminium cans and steel cans. Clear signs, especially pictorial signs and ‘Yes/No’ signs can dramatically improve your recycling efforts.

In addition to our extensive range of recycling signs, and our selection of recycling bins, Seton also create customisable signs so you can use your own wording to create custom recycling signage that is most appropriate for your business.

A picture speaks a thousand words and impactful, illustrative recycling signs can spell the difference between failure and success in meeting your recycling goals. Create and personalise your products in just a few clicks.
