What Are Safety Bollards?

A Safety bollard is a sturdy vertical pillar that shields against potential damage-causing impacts, such as those from car crashes and powerful forces. At Seton, we offer three different defensive bollard product types to meet the needs of all customers, including heavy-duty safety bollards, crash protection bollards and polyurethane protection bollards.

Our range of protective bollards is appropriate for use inside or outdoors, as they are designed to resist tremendous force and are quick and simple to install. We create heavy-duty products made of metal or plastic to increase invulnerability at a reasonable price.

What Are Bollards Used For?

Bollards are used to build a protective wall and to serve as a way to keep vehicles and vulnerable individuals, machinery or structures from impact with one another. They are used in front of buildings, on roadways, in parking areas and on construction sites.

These products are also used for building protection, as better security may be offered by an anti-ram bollard for storefronts and warehouses. The anti-ram design lessens the chance that the bollard may bend or shatter. They are frequently employed to lessen the possibility of theft and injury to neighbouring property and infrastructure.

For long-term installations, such as defending warehouse shelving, this kind of product offers a more aesthetically pleasing alternative to large concrete barriers which may be employed for temporary events.

Installing a sufficient number of fixed posts, provides a high level of cover for important areas, access points and more without impeding the flow of pedestrians in the same way that conventional barrier products do.

How to Install Safety Bollards

Installing a security bollard shouldn't be too difficult with basic DIY tools however, without the necessary expertise, mistakes might be made that could require the apparatus to require replacement.

If you choose to have your security bollard installed by a professional, pay close attention to the electrical work credentials and installation experience of your chosen contractor. Additionally, bear in mind that the specifics of the connection and installation procedures for products from various manufacturers may vary, so make sure that the technicians are acquainted with the technical literature.

Are Bollards Effective?

Security bollards are a good choice for shielding buildings from damage and theft, and they also help keep the area surrounding a storefront clear of rubbish. These posts can limit car access while still allowing clear pedestrian movement. Compared to conventional barriers whose large size completely blocks access to an area, impeding the flow of goods and people through the premises.

Commercial and crash-tested bollards installed at the loading dock shield nearby structures from unintentional harm from moving cars. Often manufactured from galvanised steel, they will block a truck from crashing into the structure. Bollards provide security for places such as loading docks, door jambs and other interior plant spaces where car accidents could happen more frequently.

Workers are also shielded by bollards from high-traffic areas within the building. Vehicle movement is slowed down by the presence of bollards, which deters employees from going into less secure areas.

Safety Bollards – Buying Guide

  • Identify the level of cover required: If you need to guide vehicles, then opt for traffic bollards. If you need to protect your enterprise against theft and structural damage, then go for high security (anti-ram) bollards or warehouse bollards.

  • Another thing to determine is whether you need plastic safety bollards or heavy-duty bollards/ steel safety bollards. Plastic safety bollards usually offer milder shelter compared to heavy-duty bollards.

  • Determine the need for installing safety bollards: Traffic-related or enterprise-related.

  • Identify the kind of safety bollards required: Heavy-duty bollards, protective bollards, security posts, crash bollards, fixed bollards, warehouse safety bollards, etc.

  • Find out if you need removable, semi-automatic or fully automatic bollards: Depending on the level of traffic, you will need to decide which kind of bollards to invest in. Ideally, semi-automatic and fully automatic bollards are used in high-traffic areas, while removable ones are used in areas with low traffic.

  • Decide on the installation process: It is advisable to hire an installation expert, but you can choose to carry out the installation yourself. Just be sure to read the installation guide thoroughly.

What Colour Should Bollards Be?

Bollards with vibrant, and possibly reflective colour options offer the additional level of security that a range of enterprises and commercial buildings require.

These products are available in multiple colours, such as red, green, yellow, orange, etc. Customers can choose the colours based on their preferences and desired installation location. When selecting the colours of their bollards, customers can use the following guide to help them decide which one is best suited to their needs:

  • Red bollards are used to signal ‘stop’, physical danger and fire-related danger

  • Orange or yellow bollards denote the presence of hazardous apparatus or equipment

  • Informative signage is indicated by blue bollards

  • Green bollards designate a safe place, a means of exit in an emergency, or a way to identify first aid supplies

Installing a post or range of posts in locations such as a warehouse or parking area may require the high visibility yellow/black of our Polyurethane Protection Bollard product.

For locations where the post is likely to experience a greater force, but high visibility is still required; why not combine our Crash Protection Bollard product with the Addgards Sleeve. The Addgards Sleeve is available in a choice of product colour options for visibility or just a more aesthetically pleasing view. Installation is quick - simply slide it over the top of your steel posts and, if required; can be cut to size with ease.

How Many Bollards Do I Need?

The number of bollards installed can vary significantly depending on the location. However, the distance between every two bollards should be between 3 and 5 feet to provide maximum protection.

This spacing allows for pedestrians, including wheelchair users to pass through comfortably but prevents unauthorised vehicle access. Conventional barriers block all access and impede flow through the area and may not offer the same security against vehicular threats.

Remember, if you are installing a barrier post or posts in parking areas or a private driveway, it is recommended that they are positioned approximately 1.5 feet from the back of the curb or wall of any size. This usually allows sufficient space for car doors to open and passengers to embark/disembark without damage to the vehicle.

At Seton we supply a comprehensive range of fixed steel and plastic protective posts, suitable for commercial premises as well as domestic installations such as a private driveway. Many carry a 5 star user rating and are available in your choice of size options. Don’t delay, ditch those ugly concrete barriers and keep your property secure today. All orders include fast fuss-free delivery from our UK distribution centre.
