What Does The Eyewash Sign Mean?

As part of first-aid signage, eyewash signs display a white pictograph of an eyewash station, or fountain, and the globally recognised first-aid cross on a green background. This combination of graphic images is used across our entire range of eyewash sign products to ensure compliance with the ISO 7010 standard. The ISO 7010 standard is a European norm to ensure easy and quick interpretation of signs with minimal written language.

Where Should Eyewash Stations be Located?

The HSE includes the need for an emergency eye wash station in your assessment of the first aid requirements for your business. During this assessment, you must determine how many eyewash stations you need, as well as their position on site. Remember, this must be in line with the nature of your company’s activities and overall risks.

The Health and Safety (First-Aid) Regulations 1981 specify that eye wash stations should be not only provided, but located in close proximity to the work area, unobstructed (by either temporary or permanent partitions) and available for immediate use. This applies irrespective of the number of employees or size of the facility and includes all high-risk areas, even if they’re not directly eye-related.

If mains tap water is not readily available for eye irrigation, at least one litre of sterile water or sterile normal saline (0.9% w/v) in sealed, disposable containers should be provided. Once the seal has been broken, containers should not be kept for reuse. Containers should not be used beyond their expiry date.

Employees must be able to reach an eyewash station or fountain within 10 seconds of suffering an incident. Reaching an eye flush fountain quickly can help to save the individual’s eyes from suffering the worst effects of the exposure to a chemical or foreign object. Remember, you’ll need an eye wash station sign, using a legally-approved graphic to inform and help educate employees and visitors.

While equipment must be visible and easy to locate, accompanied by suitable signage; it must never be used as a substitute for individuals wearing the correct personal protection items, such as safety goggles.

Combine anti-slip eyewash station floor signs with others to ensure optimal visibility and guidance. These:

  • Help people find emergency eyewash first aid quickly and easily
  • Are robust to withstand constant pedestrian traffic
  • Self-adhesive and suitable for use on most floor surfaces, indoors and out
  • Come in an economical pack of four signs for larger premises
  • Low price per sign, supplied as a cost-saving value pack of 4

There should be no debris or obstacles between an eyewash station and a hazardous area. Our Eyewash Keep Area Clear Floor Sign is made from self-adhesive vinyl. Position this around your flushing equipment as an ideal way to label the designated area and provide suitable warning that the area must be kept clear for safety reasons.

These devices are designed to provide a level of protection for anyone whose work includes a risk of eye contamination, so it is important to remember to install eyewash stations next to places where workers use or store hazardous elements such as corrosive chemicals. Staff may become familiar with the location of stations but including a suitable label should always accompany any installation.

Your eyewash spray heads must also be at least 15 cm away from the wall for easy access. Try Seton brand Nite-Glo Photoluminescent Emergency Eye Wash Signs to indicate spray bottle locations. These:

  • Have an environmentally friendly polyester film that shows white during normal lighting and glows in poor light or darkness
  • Stay illuminated for up to six hours, so any symbol or arrow remains highly visible even in a power failure
  • Comply with PSPA, DIN, IMO and British Standards for quality and durability

  • Highly visible to ensure as many people as possible take notice and follow in an emergency
  • Conveniently secured using cable ties
  • Supplied in high-quality and long-lasting PVC for all conditions

What Are The UK Requirements for Eyewash Station Signs?

In the UK, the Health and Safety (First-Aid) Regulations 1981 prescribe how employers should address and implement any first aid needs. This includes signage, equipment and training.

How much first-aid provision an employer has to make depends on the circumstances (the hazards and risks) of each workplace. Employers are well placed to determine the level of hazard and risk as they will be familiar with the exact circumstances of the workplace. There is no fixed level, but each employer needs to assess the equipment, facilities and personnel that are appropriate.

First Aid at Work
Health and Safety (First Aid) Regulations 1981

As a first aid item, saline and eye flushing solutions are subject to an expiration date. Similarly when they are used, supplies will need to be replaced. From a legal perspective, it is the duty of the responsible person to ensure supplies are always available. Our Eye Wash Must Be Replaced Sign provides notice to all individuals who should be contacted for these purposes. For a more efficient process the write-on surface includes sufficient space to add name and contact details of your responsible person.

In order to provide an adequate level of protection, it is vital that eye flushing devices are inspected regularly. Featuring the ISO compliant graphic, our Wipe-To-Change Inspection Log is a highly visible symbol to staff and visitors that your business takes its legal obligations, in caring for staff welfare and mitigating the effects of an incident seriously.

As eyewash facilities are a legal requirement, you can rest assured that all of our eyewash station warning and directional signage complies with the stated symbol and graphic regulations and necessary standards. This means that you:

  • Get quality signs in different materials and designs suited for your specific workplace
  • Durable products for heavy-duty environments
  • Stay within the legal requirements of UK regulations
