Good to know

Face respirators need to be properly cleaned in order to maximize their use. Here are a few tips to remember:
Clean the device in solution of warm water and mild detergent.
Remove cartridges/filters and immerse the face piece.
Agitate and gently clean using a soft brush.
Rinse the face piece thoroughly in fresh water.
Make sure to remove any soap residue in the exhalation valve. Hold the valve under running water whenever possible.
Disinfect in a warm suitable sanitizing solution (48°C maximum) for 2 to 3 minutes. 50 ppm of hypochlorite solution can be made with 0.13 ounce of laundry bleach for every gallon of water. Rinse thoroughly in warm fresh water (48°C maximum).
Let facepiece drip dry or use lint-free cloth. If necessary, warm air may be used to increase drying speed.
Make sure the exhalation valve is functioning properly by holding the device firmly against your face and exhaling several times.
Inspect the respirator and reinstall cartridges and/or filters.

Proper cleaning and maintenance of respiratory protective devices is a necessary aspect of effectively implementing workplace safety. Making shortcuts or ignoring the cleaning process altogether not only wears out the device faster, it exposes workers to various safety risks and defeats the purpose of using proper respiratory protection equipment.
