What are the differences between Lockout Valve Devices?
Isolating energy sources is the primary function of lockout devices, in order to ensure that all types of energy can be locked out it is imperative that you have adequate devices to meet your needs and isolate different energy sources when necessary.
Since there are many different types of lockout device we have grouped together the most commonly used ones to aid in choosing the correct device for the correct job. After you have carried out your lockout tagout preparations and created a standard process to follow, the next step is procuring the devices and safety equipment that will make your process easy to follow and maintain.

Lockout Valve Devices: Buying Guide
One of the most common types of energy that will require isolation before maintenance or repair can be carried out will be hydraulic, through the regulation of fluid or steam by control valves. There is a large range of gate valve lockout devices that enable you secure valve controls of any size. When isolating power for machinery you will generally have to apply several devices to ensure that all power remains inactive, making the machine safe to work on.
These can come in many shapes and sizes, usually to fit a specific switch or type of machinery. When it comes to pressurised pipe valves they can become a serious hazard if mishandled, so it is imperative that there are proper lockout procedures in place to ensure they are correctly isolated when the need for maintenance arises. The main types of valve lockout are as follows:
- Gate valve lockouts are by far the most used, they comprise of an innovative plastic shell cover that surrounds the round valve release wheel completely. These are secured with either lockout hasp or padlock and provide by far the most comprehensive cover, ensuring that no unauthorised access can take place.
- Ball joint lockouts attach over the valve lever control itself, rendering it inoperative. They come in many different sizes and have differing options for locking in place, with some having the ability to apply many padlocks directly, forgoing the need for a hasp.
- Butterfly valves operate much in the same way as the ball joint valves, the inner mechanism is different but the control handle itself is very similar. Usually the major difference is the size with butterfly valves tending to be larger than their ball valve counterparts.
Securing valve lockout devices is the most important part of attaching them to the valve in question. Securing them in place means that there will be no unnecessary tampering and removal. Some of the ball valve and gate valve devices are further made secure with the use of a strong cable fed through the openings for hasps and around the valve control itself, creating an even more secure device. Once safety padlocks have been engaged the device is ready to be tagged with all pertinent information and then the maintenance work can begin. All of our devices are designed to allow any type of padlock to secure in a simple way that produces maximum effect for little effort.
Cable lockout devices can be used as an alternative to the lockout valve equipment that surrounds the controls. They are usually named as a universal lockout device as they can be used for multiple applications.
Storing valve lockouts in an easily accessible lockout station helps to ensure that your lockout process will be followed when needed. Because it is an unfortunate fact that due to lack of time or misunderstanding of the importance of safety procedures, when it comes time to apply lockout devices, tags and safety gear, if the equipment is not within easy reach or in a specific, highly visible place, it can be forgotten or simply ignored, in favour of trying to carry out vital repairs in an expedient yet less efficient manner. This could lead to serious injury, so when obtaining all of the devices you need, the correct storage should also be taken into consideration.
