Fire Emergency Information Signs: Buying Guide

Fire Exit Signs Save Lives

Exit signs are designed to clearly show people the right place to go upon hearing alarms for a fire or other emergency. They should be clearly positioned using suitable sign fixings and in such a way so as to point out the shortest and quickest route out of your premises.

A sign with a running man symbol and an arrow is a particularly useful aid to understanding what to do when a fire alarm sounds. The running man symbol is clear and easy to understand and a direction arrow will point the right way to go. A photoluminescent sign glows a bright green in low lighting and will point the right way and be completely clear even in conditions of low visibility.

The distance people need to travel to evacuate your building should be as short as possible, with the distance measured from the farthest point in a room to the door leading to a protected stairway or, if there is no protected stairway, to the right exit point from the building.

Current fire exit regulations state that "a fire exit must be clearly marked, kept free of all obstructions and be compliant with all British standards and legislation." It is also imperative that fire doors are clearly indicated with, for example, a fire door keep shut sign. View our range of fire door signs for more legends. A fire door is an essential part of maintaining fire safety standards in the workplace, as such we offer a broad product range of fire door equipment and products that will aid in creating this part of your complete fire safety solution. All with a price and delivery to suit your business. Available as single versions or as a pack for an even more competitive price.

The majority of our fire exit sign products feature a man running through a doorway (the well-known running man symbol) and many are accompanied by a directional arrow pointing the way to the nearest exit – be it a running man symbol with a left arrow, right arrow, or an up or down arrow. We also have many photoluminescent fire exit signs. available as single versions and as a pack. These are designed to glow in the dark a distinctive green when a light source is obscured by power failure or smoke.

A fire exit sign is an essential part of the infrastructure of any place of work or space with public access, helping to ensure that workers and members of the public on site are not left wondering how to exit the building in the event of a fire.

Many premises will be required by law to have an appropriate fire exit sign in place, while other property owners may feel that it is appropriate to add this additional information to keep workers and visitors safe.

Choosing the right fire exit sign for the layout and usage at your premises is an important part of being a responsible property owner or business manager, and our comprehensive selection allows you to compare different fire exit signs to help you get the complete fire exit solution.

Fire exit signs are used to clearly indicate the locations of exits from buildings that are to be used by those present on the premises in the event of a fire.

A sign can use both words and pictograms to clearly convey its message, with standardised images recognisable to people from across the world (such as the running man with arrow design) to help reduce the possibility of language confusion and ensure that a sign will be completely clear and will cater to those who may have trouble reading the written labelling.

For many premises fire exit signage is part of the statutory health and safety requirements, although some people choose to add this helpful signage in premises not covered by legislation to have peace of mind to keep those on the premises safe in the event of an emergency.

Ideal Placement of Fire Exit Signs

A directional arrow fire exit sign can be used to show the right route to the nearest fire exit in the event that a fire is detected or fire alarms have been activated - See our Nite-Glo Exit Running Man Left Diagonal Arrow Down Corridor Signs and Nite-Glo Exit Man Right/Diagonal Arrow Down Signs. A static marker sign is used at points of egress to indicate a route that may be used by people to exit the building in the event of an emergency.

An external fire exit sign can be used to indicate to people and drivers outside the building that external doors also serve as fire exits and can help to ensure that these are left unobstructed for improved building safety.

Make sure you clearly indicate all fire exit routes with clear signage. It is also worth remembering that depending on a number of factors you may require multiple fire exit routes. Watch the following video for more information regarding the number of fire exit routes you may require and how they should be established.

Being Prepared for a Fire Emergency

Our product range includes a comprehensive selection of fire exit signs both with and without the running man symbol and directional arrow, to aid you in creating the right exit signage within your premises that conforms to relevant regulations and offers visitors to the building a clear visual aid to exiting in the event of an emergency. Many of our single versions are also available as a pack to give you a better price. We have a complete selection of escape and evacuation equipment to give you an overview in creating an escape solution. You also might require a fire assembly sign with a directional arrow, or a fire alarm point sign - we supply a wide assortment of assembly point and refuge point signs.

Our signs are available in a choice of materials, with a choice of mounting options. Choose from vinyl or rigid plastic self adhesive versions for direct application or opt for a sturdy wall mountable sign available in many various materials including aluminium.

Our product range includes a full selection of arrowed fire exit signs that can be used to indicate the best route to the nearest fire exit as well as traditional fire exit signage which indicates points of egress in an emergency. We also supply non traditional 3D fire exit signs that can be viewed from multiple angles making them a useful addition to any exit sign plan.

Another non traditional sign would be a Seton Motion sign which appears to move as you walk past it. This product is manufactured from a semi-rigid lenticular plastic and is useful in preventing ‘sign-blindness’ in the workplace.

A double-sided running man hanging fire exit sign is another popular choice, helping to point to building escape routes in areas such as corridors where people may view it from either side. These typically feature a running man symbol and a left arrow, right arrow or down arrow, as appropriate.

We also have exterior fire exits and keep clear signs to help ensure exits are left clear and not blocked from the outside.

In order to be sure that your employees will be prepared in the event of a fire, and not left wondering, we offer fire safety books and guides; these will maintain the knowledge necessary to deal with such events as they occur.

Fire Exit Signs Regulations

If you are responsible for managing the fire safety of a commercial premises, then you will require the right fire exit signs for your building. An exit sign which conforms to UK building regulations should be placed to indicate any doorway or other escape route which people should use in the event of a fire.

Be sure to consult the relevant health and safety requirements and have a fire risk assessment before purchasing and installing fire exit signs. Some fire exit signs are mandatory while others will depend on factors such as the size of the premises in question.

Fire exit signs are a legal requirement for the majority of businesses and need to be placed so as to clearly indicate the way to the nearest exit. An exception might be a building such as a small shop where the entrance door is also the obvious (and perhaps only) exit in the event of a fire.

Exit arrows should clearly indicate the right direction to go. We supply left arrow, right arrow, up arrow and down arrow options (in the case of steps for example).

Grenfell Tower
New Fire Safety (England) Regulations came into effect on 23rd January 2023 following the Grenfell Tower disaster of 2017.

Under article 24 of the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005, building owners or managers (responsible persons) have new duties and responsibilities, including:

  • Regular inspections each month of firefighting equipment as well as checking firefighters’ designated lifts in all high-rise residential buildings
  • Providing residents with clear instructions for fire evacuation as well as information on fire doors and their importance, and how to report a fire to the FRS (fire and rescue services)
  • Installation of the appropriate sign for stairwells, floor numbers and flat numbers that can be clearly viewed even in smoky and low light conditions in order to facilitate wayfinding in an emergency.

FAQs

What Fire Exit Signs do I need?

The type of sign you require will depend on your premises. We would advise customers to refer to the relevant health and safety legislation when planning appropriate and clear fire exit sign installation. Placement is also important - not too high or too low, and in clear view. Regardless of legislation requirements it is only responsible to take necessary precautions, and provide the right information to visitors and employees alike.

An exit sign with the universally recognised running man symbol and a directional arrow is a popular choice as it is immediately clear to show the right way to go if there’s a fire. Another consideration when creating a complete fire exit strategy is which areas of your premises would benefit from another sign, and what information you wish to convey or highlight with a particular sign. We also supply Fire Extinguisher Signs which are typically red and green and feature a fire extinguisher symbol.

What material should I choose?

The kind of sign you need will be determined by the location and usage. Consider whether you wish the sign to be flush to the wall or to stand out further. Do you want rigid plastic, self adhesive, removable repositionable adhesive, or non adhesive? Perhaps you need a sturdy aluminium sign?

Aluminium is perfect for indoor and outdoors and is a material that is non rust, weatherproof and resistant to the elements. Think about light sources - low light areas may require a sign that you can still view in the event of a primary power failure, or will glow in the dark when there is low visibility due to smoke.

Do Fire Exit Signs need to be illuminated or Photoluminescent?

Emergency signs need to be completely visible and legible at all times. In low-light areas a sign may need to be illuminated to ensure that it can be clearly viewed by all and that it meets the necessary UK fire exit signs regulations. If your business premises require emergency lighting, then your fire exit sign will have to be illuminated as well, either with external or internal lamps or with self-illuminating signs which don’t require an external power source.

Glow in the dark, nite glo technology known as photoluminescence (PL) can be ideal for an exit sign and will glow brightly in dark and low visibility conditions, is self illuminating, and will typically remain illuminated for several hours. We have both single product and 6 pack versions to help you get the best low price.

Are Photoluminescent Signs Dangerous?

Photoluminescent (glow in the dark) signs are non-toxic, non-radioactive and safe to use. Photoluminescence is a type of phosphorescence which stores energy from a light source and then releases it in darkness. As no external power source or batteries are required, photoluminescent materials are especially effective in the event of a power supply failure or low visibility areas and can be a great fail-safe option for your exit signs.

We supply both Nite-Glo and Xtra-Glo for photoluminescence. Nite-Glo has a PSPA Class B classification and will brightly glow for 6 hours. Xtra-Glo (PSPA Class C classification) will generally remain illuminated for 24 hours.
