Fatigue Mats: Buying Guide

Too many businesses regard anti-fatigue matting as ‘nice to have’ rather than a necessity that boosts efficiency and staff wellbeing.

People often wonder how standing for long periods can cause fatigue. If the muscles are not doing too much, how can they get tired?

However, just as sitting for too long can cause issues with muscle stiffness and spasms, poor blood circulation and overall fatigue, so does prolonged standing – especially on hard surfaces. To get blood flow going in the lower extremities, the heart pumps harder. As standing fatigue increases, it causes observable damage to the soft spinal tissue, knees and ankles.

An in-depth experiment into the benefits of anti-fatigue matting found that many of the issues associated with standing for long periods on hard floors such as MSDs (musculoskeletal disorders) and problems with foot and lower limb health can be offset by using appropriate flooring.

The study, conducted at Loughborough University, had 14 participants stand on a variety of matting placed on concrete slabs for 90 minute periods. At the end of this time various factors including calf measurements and temperature were checked. The results showed significant benefits to those who used anti-fatigue matting over those that stood on a bare concrete floor. It was concluded that over the course of a full day benefits from using anti-fatigue matting would be increased further.

In addition, mats also prevent accidents due to slips and trips, especially if substances such as oil or water are present.

What does and anti-fatigue mat do?

The HSE indicated that musculoskeletal disorders were the cause of approximately 27% of new and longstanding cases of reported work-related ill health issues over the 2022/2023 period. An earlier, independent survey found that among workers who stand for long periods:

More than 80% complained of back pain.
Approximately 50% complained of varicose veins.
More than 45% complained of sore feet.

Anti-fatigue mats reduce discomfort and tension when standing for long periods. When people stand for extended periods, it hinders proper circulation in the feet and legs and can cause varicose veins, deep venous thrombosis and other cardiovascular issues.
Cramping calves, burning feet, and neck and back pain are often reported by workers who are constantly standing. A standing desk mat or standing workstation mat provides soft and flexible padding that lessens the pressure on the feet, joints, muscles and spine. It increases comfort while standing and consequently improves productivity.

The texture of anti-fatigue mats also encourages slight shifts and movements that promote circulation. Studies show that anti-fatigue matting triggers the venous pump of the calf, which keeps venous outflow from the lower extremities synced with arterial inflow without unnecessary blood vessel constriction or dilation. This boosts healthy circulation and helps prevent health hazards and fatigue.

Take this bubbled anti-fatigue mat, for instance. Its raised bubbled surface improves circulation while providing a soft place to stand. Use it as an anti-fatigue mat for a standing desk or combine interlocked versions along production lines. The natural rubber construction handles temperature extremes and tough environments, so it is a durable option for industrial setups.
Any anti-fatigue matting, whether it is anti-fatigue mats for a standing desk, anti-fatigue kitchen mats or anti-fatigue mats for barbers, covers hard, rigid surfaces such as concrete to promote comfort, health benefits and overall productivity.

Seton’s expert health and safety team considered all these factors when sourcing our specialist range of anti-fatigue mats. Here, you will find exactly what you need for your specific work environment.

Padded Floor Mats and Anti- Fatigue Tiles for All Locations

When installing anti-fatigue flooring, examine which areas are most likely to need coverage and determine whether mats for smaller areas or tiles to cover larger spaces will be required.

Single mat options include:

  • Standard Anti-Fatigue Mats - These are designed to provide comfortable anti-slip floor covering in those areas of the workplace where the most traffic occurs. The mats are available in a variety of sizes and, for additional safety, can be supplied with an optional bright safety edge. They are ideal for use in picking and packing areas or manufacturing locations and conform to slip resistance regulations.

  • Economy Ribbed Anti-Fatigue Mats - These are a cost-effective way of reducing staff fatigue in the workplace. Perfect for placing at workstations, these provide a comfortable, anti-slip floor covering for smaller areas. The matting is constructed from closed-cell PVC foam and the ribbed surface gives extra grip if there is oil or water on the matting.

In areas such as warehouses you will most likely be looking to cover more space. In these instances tiles can be used to fit your exact requirements.

Standard Anti-Fatigue Tiles - These solid tiles are thick enough to cover minor irregularities in floor surfaces while the “hidden” interlocking edges provide a neat finish. Mesh tiles are especially suited to locations where liquids are present and resistant to oil and grease.

  • Deck Plate Connect Anti-Fatigue Matting - Available as either centre tiles or corner/row end pieces, these mats can be joined together to create bespoke configurations. They are ideal for running along assembly or production lines and can be used to cover large spaces quickly. The interlocking tiles are easy to clean and provide effective underfoot cushioning.

We even have flexible options such as our non-slip, anti-fatigue mat that comes in 5- or 10-metre rolls. This heavy-duty solution insulates cold, hard floors, while providing top-notch slip resistance (even against water and oils) to reduce workplace injuries in places such as professional kitchens. Simply roll it up to clean the floor. It is also fully reversible for added durability. Customise this anti-fatigue matting by cutting it to size for a specific setup.

Whether you are looking for a simple, single soft anti-fatigue mat or a hardwearing industrial-class anti-fatigue mat, we have what you need. Take a look at the solutions under Seton’s virtual roof.
