Legislation EN 388

Good to know

When selecting protective gloves to wear at work, it's important to ensure that your choice complies with European Standards of safety, especially standard EN 420, the basic requirements for protective gloves. According to the standard, EN 420-compliant gloves must conform to the following guidelines:

The gloves' pH should remain as close as possible to neutral when in a pristine and uncontaminated state, ensuring that the gloves' qualities do not adversely affect or be affected by chemicals being handled.
The highest allowed value for chromium (Chrome VI) in leather gloves is 3mg/kg, to avoid effects on contact with the wearer's skin.
Any potentially allergenic substances used in the construction of the glove must be detailed.
All size references must comply with agreed-upon common European Hand Sizes, such as minimum length or width.

Other requirements may need to be met depending on the anticipated duties to be filled by your glove choice, such as EN 388 for Mechanical Hazard Resistance. Consult with your hazard assessment officer and local Health and Safety Regulations for a full update on what you may need.
