Good to know

PPE garments provide ample protection to workers in the food industry. However, there is still the issue of hazards that these garments present in a food-handling environment. Food industry uniforms and safety garments such as industrial aprons and oven mitts may not be a main cause of health and safety risks in this setting, but employers and factory managers must recognized that risks can arise with improper care, cleaning, and handling of safety clothing.

Employers should follow these guidelines to ensure food safety:
Uniforms, PPE aprons, and other garments must be clean before use at the beginning of each shift and changed regularly when necessary.
Aprons and uniforms should not be worn outside the food preparation area.
Avoid using handkerchiefs for wiping or blowing noses, and use disposable tissues instead.
Always wear disposable gloves in the manufacturing areas.
Don’t wear jewellery while handling or preparing food.
Do not wear damaged or deteriorating PPE garments and uniforms.
Don’t wear garments with pockets above the waist or that have buttons.
