What does the law say?

As an employer, it is directly your responsibility to ensure your employees receive prompt treatment at the first signs of illness or injuries sustained at work. Accidents and incidents can occur at any time, so it is vital to make sure your emergency supplies are stocked, are not expired, and that a responsible person knows how to use the equipment available.

The Health and Safety Executive provides full guidance on first aid kit use - when your team understands not only how to use the equipment but how to top up the respective box or cabinet too, the chances of being caught out in an emergency dramatically reduces.

How many refill packs do I need?

Use our calculator below to see how many supply packs you may require, based on the number of people you need to protect. Note this is only intended as a guide.

How often do supplies need restocking?

While it is recommended by HSE guidelines; aside from any legal obligation, good practice is to make sure to restock home or workplace, such as an office, first aid supplies as soon as they have been used. Doing so will ensure no matter how many emergency response packs you have, you can rest assured you have what you need available when it matters most.

Make it quick and easy to identify when supplies need topping up, with Seton’s Tamper-proof First Aid Inspection Labels. These signs are available in bulk packs of 45 or 100 labels to enable you and your team to rapidly identify a used box, bag or cabinet. The included inspection date space also helps make primary care maintenance as pain-free as possible.

Regardless whether the supplies have been used, it is good practice to check all first aid bags and boxes approximately every three months. Doing so will help identify any products which are past their expiry date and need to be replaced, before the first responder equipment is ready for action.

What to keep in a first aid cabinet

So you have all the first aid boxes and supplies you need, but where are you going to keep the surplus supplies?

A secure First Aid Cabinet provides a great way to keep first response stock and accessories safe, visible and protect inventory from moisture, dust and environmental hazards. But what should you keep in yours?

The short answer here is, it depends. To be specific, you should stock your dedicated cabinet with the supplies needed to keep any first aid box or station stocked and ready for use. As a rule, essential items might include gloves, scissors, and assorted plasters and bandages.

Perhaps you use your first aid cabinet, less as backup storage of supplies and more in regular use in a first aid room. In this case it is worthwhile keeping your cabinet stocked up with at least the basic first aid kit supplies, recommended by the NHS.
