Eye Wash Kits & Cabinets

Making sure your workplace environment is as health and safety conscious as possible can seem like a difficult proposition, but as long as you stick to the advice in your health and safety assessment, you shouldn’t go wrong. If your work environment includes hazards that could injure the eyes of your workers – for example in a factory, workshop or laboratory – then you should equip your workplace with not only the usual first aid supplies such as bandages and plasters, but also eye wash and emergency showers, possibly in the form of eye wash kits and cabinets.

Selecting An Eye Wash Cabinet Or Kit

If your workplace requires eye wash kits and cabinets we have a wide range of options on offer. Eye Wash Stations and cabinets are a great way forward when it comes to emergency eye care, as they take the stress out of storage of the eye wash and often provide you with instructions and signage so that workers are made aware of where exactly eye wash can be procured in the event of an eye related injury. This ease of access can save precious time in an emergency.

Other wall-mounted options include the Plum Saline Eye Wash Station with Mirror, which can be used with two Plum saline solution bottles and provides a mirror for ease of use by the person who has fallen victim to an eye injury. For workplaces where chemicals are present, the Quicksafe Wall Case for the Chemical Industry is the ideal option. The solutions included in this wall mounted case are designed to be used against alkaline and acid splashes, burns and bleeding and come with duo capped bottles so that if necessary both eyes can be treated at the same time. The wall case’s clear lid also ensures the solutions inside are clearly visible from a distance.

If you do not have the space for a wall mounted unit, or if you work in an environment where eye injuries are a possibility but you are often on the move, then you should consider investing in one of our eye wash cases. We have double and triple eye wash kits available, as well as Eye Wash, Sign and Poster Bundles, which are an economical way of ensuring you workplace is not only safe for its workers, but that the workers involved also have access to proper instructions and information when it comes to using the eye wash provided.

While our range of eye wash is an important investment for any workplaces where eye related injuries are a possibility, it is important to remember that the first line of offense is defence, which is why we also carry a wide range of workwear and PPE, including eye protection.

What is the legal requirement for an eyewash station in the UK?

The Health & Safety Executive (HSE) issues extensive guidelines on the type of first aid equipment that is mandatory in workplaces, including such equipment as sterile and safe-to-use eye wash kits.
These kits are often an excellent portable option to deal with potential eye irritation and injury, and to complement static eye wash stations.

The Health and Safety (First-Aid) Regulations 1981 make it clear that you must have “adequate and appropriate equipment, facilities and personnel to ensure their employees receive immediate attention” when an incident occurs.
This means that all employers should consider sourcing eyewash kits to add to their first aid equipment. Many also need a more specialised eye wash cabinet (such as one specifically for chemical splashes). This all needs to go alongside creating an eye wash station policy and procedure.

Keep in mind that it is not just your trained first aiders who need to know how to use your eye wash first aid kit. All employees should be aware of how to self-administer this essential health and safety equipment and how to use eye wash effectively when a colleague or visitor needs immediate help.

Duty of care to non-employees

Many organisations must invest in the correct first aid equipment to fulfil their indemnity obligations and ethical duties with regard to non-employees, such as visitors to a factory or warehouse, students in education settings, and guests within hospitality and tourism businesses and public buildings.
Having eye wash kits in your first aid equipment for event attendees can also be vital, especially when it is an outdoor site.

To be fully compliant, make sure that you also have a well-placed eyewash station sign. Every second counts when someone has experienced eye incursion or irritation and needs access to quality-assured eye wash safety products.
Having portable eye wash solutions and equipment enables you to respond to an incident anywhere on your site, and they can be potentially used ‘on the move’ as you take the affected individual to gain medical help and advice.

What should be in an eye wash kit?

We only supply good-quality and durable eye wash kits and cabinets, but you still need to be aware of such issues as keeping the surrounding area hygienic, and regularly checking the contents against a checklist of what should be in an eye wash kit.

A good kit would include sterile eye wash solution and sterile eye pad dressings.
Make sure that your instructions for use are always in place, preferably as a permanent eyewash station sign.
It is vital that any sterile water or saline solutions are in date with unbroken seals.
Regularly test your eye wash kit and use our affordable H&S equipment so that you can replace outdated items with ease.

When not to use an eye wash station

Fumes, gases, biological agents, dust and other airborne particles – as well as splashes from chemical substances – can require instant action to wash out eyes, using the contents of an H&S compliant eyewash station or portable kit. Even excessive heat, ultraviolet light or minute sparks from a production post can have a detrimental effect on eye health.

Quick action could prevent scarring or blindness, soreness and temporary sight issues, or a nasty infection in the eye.
However, if there is a facial injury, or specifically a clear injury to the eye, immediate medical advice may need to be sought before using an eye wash kit.
