Secure Drum Containment - Your Options

Drums can be used to store a variety of chemicals and harmful substances. It is important to find a means of storage that works for you, your business, and the environment in which you operate. Each option fulfils a different height and weight requirement and can be used to store several different drums and substances.

The Control of Substances Hazardous to Health (COSHH) Regulations contains the chemical drum storage regulations for the UK. The HSE highlights the importance of carrying out a COSHH assessment to:

  • Identify harmful substances and their associated risks.

  • Decide where and how containers should be stored.

  • Determine the PPE needed to handle and dispose of dangerous materials.

Seton’s health and safety experts handpicked the best in drum storage solutions. Our specialist range contains everything you need for your unique setup.

Where Should Drums Be Stored?

The type of drum storage area you have depends on the type of material or liquid you’re storing. The HSE details hazardous waste drum storage requirements as follows:

  • Do not store toxic, flammable or self-reactive materials in the same place.

  • You can use racking or freestanding multi-layer storage for low-risk materials.

  • Implement spill and leak prevention to prevent cross-contamination.

  • Limit the sizes of stacks and implement the necessary distancing measures.

  • Flammable liquids: store containers in the open air where possible or in well-ventilated indoor areas. Stack drums no more than three high and use approved pallets or racking.

Seton’s bunded drum storage is a walk-in safety store for chemical containers and drums. It’s 1,000-litre sump capacity meets all current legislative requirements to ensure that you get a safety-approved unit.

Designed for indoor and outdoor use, the economy drum store is both secure and weather resistant. It provides a large amount of storage space for drums and accessories of all types. The galvanised mesh floor will contain spills and leaks without needing any further clear-up measures.

If you need to store large quantities of flammable materials, a dedicated flame-resistant storage unit is vital. This will protect the contents by delaying their exposure to fire for up to 30 minutes. It is well-ventilated to prevent dangerous fumes from building up and meets all current regulations.

This flammable drum storage offers easy walk-in access and is the ideal solution for large quantities of flammable substances and chemicals. In addition to the above, it offers:

  • Proper storage for oil drums.

  • A fully welded sump that prevents leaks and spills to curb risks.

  • A heavy-duty door fitted with 2 x 5 lever deadlocks to improve security.

How Do You Store Drums Outside?

Control your outdoor drum storage areas and COSHH storage containers as you would with indoor storage. You also need to implement certain safety measures to ensure that your outdoor storage facilities don’t create added risks.

  • Use pallets for oil drum bunded storage or for chemical barrel storage. These keep the barrels off the ground so that they’re not submerged during bad weather. Spill pallets also contain spilled and leaked liquids.

  • Ensure that your containers and drums or drum storage cabinet are weatherproof.

All of our walk-in drum units, including general purpose safety stores and hazard huts, provide a similar level of protection and storage. The use of a ramp will allow drum handling equipment to access the store, eliminating the risks associated with manual handling. Be sure to consider this very worthwhile accessory when selecting your storage items. If you are likely to use your unit for storing substances that aren’t contained in drums, remember to include some additional storage. Bunded shelves and small chemical cabinets are available, or standard shelves can be purchased for tools or other items.

We have a drum storage cabinet for every workplace. These cabinets are perfect for laboratory, healthcare and workshop setups that need a safe place to keep hazardous substances. Our top sellers include:

Finally, ensure that signage in the storage area is up to date and clearly shows the nature of the hazards stored, any specialist instructions for their storage or handling, and whether personal protective equipment (PPE) is required.

Is It Okay To Stack Drums?

The question of whether chemical barrel storage or oil drum bunded storage can be stacked often pops up. This is only natural as stacking saves space, especially in places where floor areas are limited.

Whether you stack drums vertically or go for a horizontal drum storage option largely depends on the nature of the hazardous substance.

For example, some liquid flammable and other chemical mixes cause a reaction and can result in explosions or fires. When this is the case, it’s best not to have these barrels or containers stacked. Even if you have a drum storage building, it is better to keep volatile substances apart in case of spills or leaks.

On the other hand, low-risk IBC drum storage solutions such as stacking options can provide safe storage for these non-volatile materials. Here, you can use a drum bank, such as our COSHH-approved oil drum storage solution, that:

  • Comes in two and four-drum capacity options to safely and securely store multiple barrels.

  • Offers the ultimate in spill control.

  • Is a strong and durable solution with 30-minute fire resistance.

On a smaller scale are our polyethylene drum racker and hardcover spill pallets. These are ideal for storing small amounts of hazardous substances and include several clever safety features to prevent accidental leaks. The spill pallet can be used indoors or outdoors, while the racker and stacker are ideal for smaller spaces indoors.

The double poly racker, mentioned above, is an ideal space-saving oil drum storage or chemical drum storage and dispensing solution. This drum storage rack:

  • Is a modular system, so you can easily customise it for your purposes.

  • Has an in-built sump base for leaks and spills.

  • Is made from tough and durable polyethylene to handle all environments.

  • Is highly visible.

Each storage container is designed to be safe and secure. This will protect anyone who may be working near the contained chemicals, and also the drums themselves from misuse or theft.

How Do You Store Empty Drums?

Some people think that a drum is safe once it’s empty. This is far from true.

Residual chemicals and vapours in the drum storage containers still pose a risk. That’s why proper care should be taken when storing empty drums.

Firstly, label empty bunded IBC storage and chemical drum storage with what the unit contained and the date on which it was emptied. This informs people of possible hazards during handling.

Avoid the prolonged storage of containers on-site. Remove empty drums as soon as possible to reduce unnecessary risks.

Our drum storage hut holds up to eight empty drums and provides secure outdoor storage for residual hazardous materials. It is an ideal temporary storage solution for empty barrels. Its:

  • Tough polyethylene construction is rust-proof and won’t fade in direct sunlight.

  • Extra-large capacity limits the risk of spills and leaks.
