Good to know

Employers should bear the responsibility of protecting their employees from the tasks workers are exposed to when carrying out tasks in a hazardous environment. They are required to ensure, for instance, that employees who work with or are exposed to furnaces are protected against the extreme heat of the work area. Employers must therefore recognise the necessity of providing their staff with safety work wear.

However, managers far too often provide minimal safety gear. The question of quality and available PPE options is far too often left unconsidered. For example, is the fabric of the provided protective clothing absorbent, made of lightweight and breathable material? Can the employee move freely while wearing the safety gear, or does the clothing restrict movement? If the employee is working in wet environments, are waterproof trousers and jackets provided?

These questions need to be addressed, since poor quality work wear, even when properly used, can leave employees even more exposed to dangers in the workplace. For instance, an employee wearing sub-par safety gear may not feel entirely confident when they are assigned to a hazardous work area. Instead of focusing on completing their tasks effectively and efficiently, they may worry about potential hazards, leaving them distracted and unaware of actual dangers that are present.
