Industrial Floor Paints: Buying Guide

A “quick coat of paint” can make a huge difference to your surroundings. Painting floors can dramatically improve the appearance of your workplace, making it look clean and smart in one easy step. Aside from aesthetics, one of the biggest advantages of painting your floors is the ability to simplify wayfinding and workflow by marking out specific areas. Floor paints are ideal for:

  • Marking walkways in warehouses, hospitals, factories and other large sites

  • Showing authorised areas for forklift trucks and other material handling machinery

  • Highlighting storage and red tag areas

  • Advising of “no go” or dangerous areas across your site

  • Creating car parking bays, pedestrian routes and other traffic markings, such as arrows

Zoning areas with floor markings and colours puts this information exactly where it’s needed so there can be no confusion.

Concrete Paint and Other Floor Coating Options

When choosing paint, an indoor/outdoor floor coating option is often the most cost-effective, such as our Traffic Grade Car Park Paint. It can be used pretty much anywhere and will allow for continuity of routes and colour schemes across your site. Traffic grade paints are available in chlorinated, water-based and heavy-duty formulas. Always look for quick-drying paints to minimise downtime.

There are several grades of paint suitable for internal applications, so it is important to consider which locations the paint will be used in and choosing accordingly. A water-based paint such as the Traffic Grade Car Park Paint will offer good resistance to chemicals and solvents, while resin-based paints are extremely hard wearing and will be perfect where forklift traffic and oils are present.

For larger areas that might be hard to ventilate, water-based paints have less odour than several of the alternatives, making the task of painting and subsequent use of the space much more pleasant. They are also safer to use, however we recommend wearing appropriate PPE (Personal Protective Equipment), such as overalls and gloves at all times.

When painting lines outside there are several options over and above working freehand. Thermoplastic tape such as the Flexiline Preformed Thermoplastic Road Markings can be laid down and affixed using a gas blowpipe. These will mark out parking bays, cycle lanes and pedestrian walkways in a matter of moments. A line marking system which features an applicator such as the Easyline® Edge will make painting difficult spaces much easier.

Floor Primers and Preparation

Before painting your floors, it’s important to spend time making sure the surface is sound and safe. Use our surface repair materials to put right any problems you might have. Cracks and small holes can be dealt with very quickly using patch repair compounds such as the Epoxyshield Fine Crack Repair. For larger areas, greater quantities of concrete repair are available ready-mixed. Additionally, floor levelling compound is easy to use, inexpensive and will hide any small imperfections to give a safe, smart finish. It is essential to prep the ground before using any of our thermoplastic road marking.

Surfaces such as concrete are porous and, as such, can soak up paint as it’s applied. This can mean more paint than is needed is used and/or lead to a patchy result. Using a simple primer before painting will ultimately save time and money by allowing the job to be done right the first time. Etchants will key concrete to aid adhesivity and are easy to apply using a simple watering can and broom. Finally, sealers will prolong the life of your newly painted floor by adding extra protection from dust, dirt and moisture.
