What is Lockout Tagout? |
Lockout Tagout is a systematic safety procedure, that involves turning off the energy supply or moving mechanisms of industrial machinery and equipment while maintenance work or repairs is being carried out. This procedure protects workers from potential accidents and prevents damage to machinery. |
Why should I introduce a Lockout Tagout Programme? |
Every year thousands of workers are killed or injured while performing maintenance and repairs. Every company has a legal obligation to ensure that ALL energy sources are switched off and ‘locked out’ while machinery or equipment is being serviced. |
The Provision and Use of Work Equipment 1992 Regulation 19 – Isolation from sources of Energy states:
“Every employer shall take appropriate measures to ensure that reconnection of any energy source to work equipment does not expose any person using the equipment to any risk to his health and safety [and that]…work equipment is provided with suitable means to isolate it from all its sources of energy.” |

Review and Improve

Work with the relevant staff on any improvements that might be required
