Conduct a Risk
Assessment |
 |
Identify hazardous practices by looking at different factors such as:
The task – What does it involve? Can it be changed to be safer/easier?
The individual – Are they trained? Do they need Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)?
The load – Is it heavy? Is the load unstable? Are you using the correct equipment for the load?
The Environment – Is the floor even? Could the environment change e.g. gust of wind? |

Reduce or Eliminate the Risk |
 |
Ideally you should eliminate the risk, but where this is not possible work towards reducing the risk. To achieve this you should consider the following:
The task – Remove potentially hazardous tasks altogether, e.g. stack heavy boxes at lower levels rather than on high shelves – this would reduce the risk of back injuries and falls.
The individual – Train all staff on safe lifting techniques and for any other potentially hazardous tasks that may be involved in.
The load – Remove the risk altogether by using equipment, e.g. sack trucks and turntable trucks, to move heavy boxes.
The Environment – Keep your workplace tidy to eliminate slip and trip hazards – e.g. fill in pot-holes, mark out pathways, and clean up spills as soon as they happen. |
