British Oil Storage Regulations

The storage of oil within the UK is a complex subject that is made all the more difficult by the rules differing between England and Scotland. Below is a quick summary on the key features of the legislation and guidance on how to comply.

English Oil Storage Regulations

The Regulation:
The Control of Pollution (Oil Storage) Regulations 2001

Who it affects:
Anyone storing 200 litres of oil or more above ground at a commercial, industrial or institutional site
Anyone storing 3,500 litres of oil or more at a domestic site

What it requires:
Any oil stores built after 1st March 2002 (with the exception of waste oil stores) are required to have a secondary containment facility

Scottish Oil Storage Regulations

The Regulation:
The Water Environment (Oil Storage) Scotland Regulations 2006

Who it affects:
Anyone storing 200 litres of oil or more above ground at a commercial, industrial, agricultural or institutional site. This includes storage of waste mineral oil and storage within a building
Anyone storing 2,500 litres of oil or more at a domestic site

What it requires:
Facilities commenced after 1st April 2006 should already comply. Existing facilities located within 10m of any surface water or 50m of a borehole/well should have complied by 1st April 2008. Remaining facilities will have to comply by 1st April 2010
