Where should I locate a bin?
As close to the smoking shelter / designated smoking area as possible. Also consider installing them
at entry points to your building to support the no smoking signs that you should have displayed. Consider
whether you want smokers congregating outside the entrance of your building, if not, designate a separate
area for smoking. However, visitors may not be aware of this policy and will still need a place to dispose of
the cigarette. |
Don’t locate smoking areas where smokers can’t see them or are difficult to get
to, areas where fire risks
are increased (e.g. oil spills from vans/lorries) or where
smoking may conflict with your organisations daily
operations. |
What else should I consider?
| |
| • |
Display smoking area signs to direct staff and visitors to the designated smoking area. This will
discourage them from loitering and demonstrate that you are catering for their needs. |
| • |

Display cigarette butt disposal signs within the smoking area to remind smokers of their obligation to
dispose of litter. A gentle reminder can make all the difference. |
| • |

Consider providing smoking shelters that provide cover, yet remain compliant with the smoking ban.
