Good to know
There are different types of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE). Each of these have specific applications and use requirements so it’s essential that employees understand its uses as well as importance. They include:
Head Protection. This includes industrial safety helmets, scalp protectors, and caps/ hair nets. This type of PPE is usually required in construction sites, tunnels or excavation areas.
Hearing Protection. Must be worn by employees who are likely to be exposed to noise at or above the Exposure Action Level. Some examples include earplugs which are inserted into the ear canal, earmuffs, and semi-inserts which cover the entrance to the ear canal.
Eye Protection. Workers who deal with power tools or hazardous substances are required to wear this type of PPE. Eye shields, safety goggles, safety spectacles, and face shields are some examples.
Foot Protection. This type is usually seen in demolition or construction sites. Workers are required to wear some form of foot protection such as safety boots or shoes and steel-toe cap footwear to protect from sharp or falling objects or anti-static and conductive footwear to protect workers from electric shock.
Hand and Arm Protection. Cuffs, armlets, gauntlets, gloves and barrier creams are some examples of this type of PPE. Workers who handle abrasives, sharp objects, or work with vibrating equipment such as pneumatic drills are required to wear this type of PPE.
Body Protection. These includes hooded coveralls, aprons, overalls, life jackets, harnesses, and back supports.
Respiratory Protection. These are either respirators that supply clean air, filters that clean contaminated air or dust masks that prevent the inhalation of airborne particulates. These types are usually worn when harmful dust, fumes, or vapours are present in the workplace. -
