Good to know

When people with sensitive skin come into contact with items made of or containing latex, they suffer allergy-like reactions. These reactions can range from mild skin irritations to potentially fatal anaphylactic shock.

Because of this, there has been a growing initiative to offer nitrile gloves in the medical and healthcare industry (as well as in various others). These laboratory gloves are not only necessary for workers who are latex-sensitive, but are also an option for medical personnel who work with latex-sensitive patients.

To obtain certain traits that are similar to rubber, nitrile gloves are manufactured with a designer polymer known as acrylonitrile. Sulphur, butadiene and other chemical substances are added with the nitrile to give the glove strength, durability and elasticity.

Using a synthetically derived component to manufacture the glove helps avoid the possibility of latex allergies. Among the alternatives to latex, disposable nitrile gloves afford wearers one of the highest degrees of protection. Nitrile gloves also tend to be more elastic and more form-fitting than other non-latex glove options.
