Microwave instruments require calibration Review by Roger Kirman

Having tested a brand new instrument of this type and a similar model in an anechoic chamber I found the level of inaccuracy to be significant. Concerned that I may have found misleading results, I sent a similar instrument to the National Physical Laboratory who confirmed similar results. I would suggest that anyone buying this instrument type takes the opportunity to have it calibrated to confirm the accuracy claimed by the manufacturer.

No instrument is that good that it does not require calibration.

The following quote, from the UK National Physical Laboratory (NPL), set out on page 2 of their publication "A guide to power flux density and field strength measurement" published in 2004. ISBN 0 904457 39 7, makes the point.

"Neither an exacting specification nor an accurate instrument is a substitute for a regular calibration routine, as without calibration at suitable intervals the instrument is unlikely to remain accurate or perform to its intended specification. Furthermore, where measurements are intended for RF hazard purposes, the integrity of the measurement is paramount to ensure the safety of public and personnel."

I may have been unlucky in choosing an instrument that was not up to specification, but I would always have this type of instrument calibrated to prove its accuracy. (Posted on 18/09/2011)
