Good to know

There are generally 2 types of hearing protection devices namely ear muffs and earplugs. Each device has their set of advantages and disadvantages:

Ear Muff Advantages:

Easy to wear and fit
Highly visible so it's easier to monitor if the device is being used
Not easily lost or misplaced
May be worn even with minor ear infections

Ear Muff Disadvantages:

Provides lower levels of noise protection
Heavier, potentially resulting in fatigue when worn over long periods of time
May interfere with other personal protective equipment like safety glasses or goggles and hard hats
More uncomfortable to use in hot and humid work areas
Presence of facial hair, jewellery, or long hair may interfere with the device's effectiveness

Earplug Advantages:

Lightweight and easy to carry around
More comfortable to use over long periods of time and in hot or humid environments
Can be used effectively with other personal protective equipment as well as facial and long hair and jewellery and even ear muffs
Provides higher noise protection levels

Earplug Disadvantages:

More difficult and more time consuming to wear and fit
Not suitable for personnel with ear infections
Its size makes these more prone to misplacement and loss
Its size also makes use more difficult to monitor

The most important factors to consider are the levels of noise protection ear muffs and earplugs provide. While ear muffs give lower noise protection, the ease of use all but ensures workers get more consistent hearing protection. Conversely, while earplugs give higher noise protection, consistency is commonly an issue due to difficulties in fitting. If earplugs are what your workplace needs, be sure to make time to train your workers as to earplugs' proper use. Ear muffs, for their part are ideal for work places where noise is intermittent.
