Good to know
One thing you may have noticed about high visibility jackets – in fact high visibility clothing in general – is these feature both a fluorescent and retroreflective element. One common question is; 'what exactly is the difference between a retroreflective and fluorescent material?'
A fluorescent material reflects sunlight in such a way that makes the material seem brighter. This is achieved through the use of special pigments. Fluorescent material functions optimally only when there is a source of sunlight. This being the case, fluorescent material provides increased visibility during dawn and dusk hours and is necessary for enhancing daytime visibility.
A retroreflective material reflects light back to the source, making it seem like the material is glowing. This is achieved through specialised manufacturing processes, the most common of which is through the addition of glass beads into the material. When used in garments, retroreflective materials usually appear as bands and can make the wearer visible even at night or in low light conditions. -
