Resuscitators and Face Shields

Undertaking a health and safety assessment is one of the most important things you can do in a workplace, but once that’s been done, you’ll need to ensure you’re adhering to the guidelines set by the assessment. That will ensure you’re doing everything you can to make the workplace as safe and healthy as possible for workers. Not all offices and workplaces will need to have resuscitators and face shields as part of their first aid supplies, but they are a good investment for larger workplaces and especially those that have trained first aiders present who know how to use them.

If you’re looking for a comprehensive kit that can be used by first aiders in the event of a major incident, then the First Response First Aid Kit is the way to go. We have many options available when it comes to first aid kits, but this one includes everything you might need in a large workplace or office should the worst happen and a troubling accident occur.

As with all first aid kits, you will need to replace any items that are used, or in the case of sterile items, you will need to replace them by the use by date on the individual item, so be sure to inspect the dates.

The Pocket Mask Resuscitator would be a good addition to smaller first aid kits in less high-risk work environments. The soft mask easily fits to any face, including children and infants, and has a one-way valve that prevents infection. It also comes with clear, concise instructions that are easy to follow in the event of an emergency.

Another great option for slotting into just about any first aid kit would be the Resuscitation Face Shield. These face shields are easy to use, economical and above all hygienic. When used by first aiders during CPR, they can help cut down the risk of infection or contamination and they come with very easy to follow instructions.

This is why it’s such a good idea to invest in safe, easy to use equipment such as resuscitation and face shields, because you never know when they might be needed. They might just mean the difference between being able to help someone in need and not. In this way, not only will you be following workplace regulations, but you will also be helping make sure your workers are as safe as possible. Not only should you invest in the safety equipment but you should also be sure to know everything about the equipment that we offer, especially, AED's. Our Automated External Defibrillator- AED guide will make sure you know everything about your life saving equipment.

Good practice on resuscitators and face shields

The Health and Safety (First-Aid) Regulations 1981 outline what constitutes “appropriate” equipment, facilities and personnel that employers must provide to help someone in the immediate aftermath of a workplace accident or illness. As mentioned previously, this includes having compliant resuscitators and face shields available and placed in key locations.

This is a duty of care for larger workforces, which include staff whose age or health needs may make them vulnerable to cardiovascular issues, for example. Or, does your premises receive visitors – or have overnight guests – who are older and therefore more prone to cardiovascular disease?

Also, in factories and laboratories where there could be an incident that compromises someone’s respiratory health, having breathable face shields available can be crucial.

Some of the most straightforward resuscitators for the workplace are quick to use and include detailed instructions for the person who responds to the emergency. Some of the more specialist first aid items such as mouth-to-mouth CPR face shields do require training on when and how to use them.

Regular checks of the contents of your workplace first aid equipment must include evaluating not just how many of each item you stock, but also whether everything is still sterile and in date.

Also, it’s a good idea to talk to your first aid personnel about the issue of consent to receive treatment, and any reticence they have about using resuscitators and face masks. If someone is unconscious and in crisis, consent is not required, and intervening when someone has stopped breathing is vital.

Do face shields expire?

When you buy good-quality resuscitators and face shields, they can be stored and used for several years. It’s important to check the manufacturer’s instructions on how long a face shield can be kept for.

The important thing to keep in mind, though, is that proper storage of such items as a face mask for resuscitation is vital, as it can impact their ability to do their job properly. They should be kept away from excessive temperatures or moisture, for example.

Also, you need to properly clean and disinfect items such as your CPR mouth shield stocks – not just after use but also after periods of being stored in your kit. This can ensure that your resuscitation equipment doesn’t become compromised over time, and also doesn’t create an infection risk in a vulnerable member of staff or visitor to your premises.

How to maintain face shields and other resuscitation equipment?

Make sure that the person responsible for first aid inventory and status knows the proper procedure for cleaning resuscitators and face masks.

If you have a face shield with filter components, for example, these may need to be removed before the shield is cleansed, dried and put back in your kit.

Are face shields effective in addressing workplace CPR issues?

There are some excellent resuscitation shield products that can be used when conducting cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR). These include a pocket resuscitation mask that first aid staff can carry around with ease.

The primary aim of face shields for CPR is to minimise infection risk for the person in distress, and whoever is administering first aid. Face masks also act as a barrier to vomit and other bodily fluids while the casualty is undergoing CPR.

Are face shields expensive?

Resuscitators and face shields come in a wide variety of types, from a CPR face shield keyring to workplace defibrillators (AED equipment for employers). Having the correct face shields in your first aid kit can be highly affordable due to our competitive pricing.

However, the real question is the value of someone’s life. Having quality resuscitation items to hand could prove ‘priceless’ in an emergency.
