The Health and Safety (First Aid) Regulations 1981:ACOP reg.3(1)
requires employers to provide adequate and appropriate equipment, facilities and personnel to enable first aid to be given to your employees if they are injured or become ill at work. These Regulations apply to all workplaces including those with 5 or fewer employees and to the self - employed.
The minimum first aid provision on any work site is :
- A suitable stocked first aid box
- An appointed person to take charge of first aid arrangements
There is no standard list of items to put in a first aid box. It depends on the outcome of your risk assessment to identify the particular needs of your workplace, However, as a guide, and where there is no special risk in the workplace, a minimum stock of items would be :
- A leaflet giving general guidance on first aid
- 20 individually wrapped sterile adhesive plasters (assorted sizes)
- 2 sterile eye pads
- 4 individually wrapped triangular bandages
- 6 safety pins
- 6 medium (approx 120 x 120mm) individually wrapped sterile unmedicated wound dressings
- 2 large (approx 180 x 180mm) individually wrapped sterile unmedicated wound dressings
- one pair of disposable gloves
From 1st October 2009 significant changes were made to the First Aid at Work Regulations and changes to First Aid training requirements have been implemented:
- FAW (First Aider at Work) is required to attend a 3 day training course
- EFAW ( Emergency First Aider in the workplace) is required to attend a 1 day training course
The HSE highly recommends that any person trained in either FAW or EFAW, attend a 1/2 day 'Skills Update' course at the end of both year 1 and 2.
For any workplace which deems that a First Aider is not required, it may be suitable to have an Appointed Person. The role of an appointed person includes looking after the equipment and facilities and calling the emergency services when required. Appointed Persons should not attemp to give first aid for which they have not been trained.
The Health and Safety (First Aid) Regulations 1981 ACOP reg.3(4)
States that an employer should make an assessment of first aid needs appropriate to the circumstances of each workplace.
The table below should help an employer assess the risk and therefore the appropriate number of first aid personnel required.
| Category of risk | How many employees do you have ? | What first aid personnel do you need ? | ||||||
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
|
Low risk e.g. offices,shops, libraries |
|
|
||||||
|
Higher risk e.g.light engineering and assembly work, food processing, warehousing, work with dangerous machinery or sharp instruments, construction, checmical manufacture, work involving hazards e.g. hydrofluoric acids or confined spaces |
|
|
* Where first aiders are shown to be unnecessary, there is still a possibility of an accident or sudden illness, so you should consider providing qualified first aiders
** The types of injuries that might arise in working with the hazards identified will influence whether the first aider should be trained in EFAW or FAW
