Transporting Gas Cylinders

Organisations keep different types of gas cylinders based on the nature of their work and the potential hazards. The most common gas cylinders kept at home are liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) cylinders. Those kept at the workplace include LPG cylinders, acetylene gas cylinders and high-pressure industrial gas cylinders. All these gases are extremely hazardous for human health, so it is very important to pay special attention to how they are transported and stored.

Transporting gas cylinders or gas bottles without a proper trolley for gas bottles can be very risky, and improper handling of these gas bottles can lead to life-threatening situations. Not only is the gas itself harmful to humans, but faulty transportation of gas cylinders can also cause occupational injuries if they slip or fall.

How Do Gas Cylinder Accidents Occur?

When a valve malfunctions, the hazardous potential of a pressurised gas bottle rises, posing a threat to nearby workers and residents. An explosion or a gas cylinder propelled by a rapid gas release might destroy nearby structures and endanger employees. Safety measures, such as training on equipment implementation, should be taken as a precaution for both employers and employees, to prevent such threats from arising at the workplace.

Without the proper handling equipment, such as cylinder trolleys, staff members working with gas bottles are also at serious risk of suffering musculoskeletal injuries, alongside the possibility of being exposed to hazardous leaks.

What Kinds of Accidents Can Occur Without Proper Gas Cylinder Carriers?

Some of the common types of accidents associated with the mishandling of gas cylinders include:
  • Burns
  • Corrosion
  • Combustion
  • Chemical explosion
  • Asphyxiation due to inhaling the poisonous gas

The chances of mishaps occurring near compressed gas cylinders may increase depending on other factors such as heat sources, fire or sharp objects that might puncture the tanks.

Acetylene cylinder truck

According to a study conducted on 100 gas cylinder handlers, 62% suffered shoulder discomfort, 47% suffered neck-related concerns and 57% experienced back and waist injuries. Therefore, it is crucial to equip the workplace with the best equipment, created with this objective in mind, and to ensure that everyone is aware of how to use it. Seton’s single acetylene cylinder truck, which has undergone rigorous testing and can carry a maximum load of 150kg, is a prime example.

Top-quality gas bottle and cylinder trolleys are essential for use on busy worksites and in crowded workshops. Many of the trolleys available can be supplied with or without a rear wheel to give extra support and reduce the number of times that a cylinder will need to be tilted. As with cylinder storage racks and stands, trolleys that are used to transport cylinders must include a restraining strap or chain to prevent them from accidentally falling. If cylinders become damaged while being moved, the risk of leaks and explosions is greatly increased.

The mobility of employees and potentially harmful materials at work must be considered part of your risk assessment, as it may be a significant contributing factor to accidents. Our cylinder trolleys are excellent, fuss-free options for storing and transporting gas cylinders. Seton’s Gas Cylinder Carrier - Galvanised can hold up to 16 bottles simultaneously and has two storage levels. Similarly, the Multi-Cylinder Trolley can accommodate up to 12 oxygen gas cylinders at the same time.

Using Cylinder Transport Pallet or cylinder carriers to move and safely retain their contents, bottles can be shifted throughout your site in a single trip instead of across multiple risky trips. Not only will these products ensure safe transportation and movement of gas cylinders within the workplace, but they will also save a lot of time and effort. A double-wide trolley is another of Seton’s best-selling products that can transport two cylinder types simultaneously, such as the oxygen/acetylene truck or double-width oxygen/propane truck.

Are Gas Bottles Ok in the Sun?

Most gas bottles are specially designed to be able to withstand high pressures. These bottles are safe to keep in the sun whenever necessary because they have sufficient space left in them, so they can generally bear high pressures. However, the type of gas contained in the gas cylinder also plays a crucial role in its ability to remain intact or burst open. Regardless, it is highly unlikely that gas cylinders will explode in the sun if they are transported and stored safely using gas cylinder carriers.

Can you transport Gas Bottles on their side?

Except for forklift gas bottles, all gas bottles must be kept upright at all times. Unless it was made to be used that way, you should never lay down a gas bottle (propane tank) on its side for safety (LPG gas cylinder safety) reasons.

Gas Cage Cylinder Storage

According to expert advice, gas cylinders should always be kept upright in a gas bottle trolley or a gas cage, supported by a solid surface. There should be sufficient space for each bottle’s expansion, without their regulators. By doing this, the risk of fire will be reduced as the gas won’t be able to escape as a liquid.

Unfortunately, keeping and storing them in an upright position becomes difficult in the absence of specifically designed gas bottle trolleys and gas cylinder carriers, such as a 3 wheel gas cylinder trolley welding gas bottle trolley, gas cylinder lifting trolley and gas cylinder trolley stainless steel. Invest in Seton’s high-quality gas bottle products to ensure that your gas cylinders are always stored safely and securely, whether at home or in the workplace.

Regardless of which type or size of trolley you require, Seton is here to help you stay safe. Our range has both large and small gas bottle trolley options. We are committed to offering our customers only the best-quality gas handling solutions. Whether you simply need propane gas trolleys for occasional use or a larger, multipurpose solution, you can trust that you are getting the safest and most durable equipment on the market.
