Good to know
There are three general categories that distinguish different types of protective work gloves. These categories are identified by the CE symbol and correspond to a certain level and kind of risk posed that hand protection must defend against.
Minimal Risk - Category I
Category I gloves are only intended for use against minimal hazards and dangers. They feature simple designs and are usually meant to preserve hygiene or comfort rather than heavy duty. Category I thermal protection gloves can withstand temperatures below 50°C.
Intermediate Risk - Category II
Category II gloves operate in environments where serious hazards are present, but injuries can be reversed by timely medical care or avoided with adequate protective gear. Work gloves in Category II often have special protection features such as resistance to mechanical hazards under EN 388 Standard Compliance. These gloves must be certified by noted bodies, which will issue CE marking to identify their capabilities.
Mortal or Irreversible Risk - Category III
Category III gloves are worn when crippling, permanent, or lethal injury is possible during the course of work. Category III gloves often feature protection from toxic or corrosive chemicals, or extreme temperature. Independent bodies must certify both the gloves and their point of manufacturer before issuing the CE marking, along with a number beside it to identify the inspecting body.
